Mission and Vision Statement

Mission Statement

My Future Learning Space is founded on the belief that every girl deserves the right to an education no matter what their race, religion or place of birth. My FLS is committed to helping girls feel empowered to have a voice, a sense of self-belief and the knowledge that will enable them to seek a better life for themselves.

Vision Statement

My vision is to develop a Future Learning Space called “Girls U.N.I.T.E.D” which will provide what girls need in order to reach their full potential. The goal will be to work towards bringing about change to their own lives which will, in turn, impact the wider community through developing these key areas –

Understanding, Nourishing, Inspiring, Teaching, Educating, Dreaming

Introduction

Inspirations for Girls' Education

I have chosen to focus on this initiative because I am a mother and a daughter.  I am a proud mother of a daughter who has grown up in a country where she has been free to follow her dreams, develop her passions and follow her own pathway. She has been able to develop her creativity and aspirations and now has employment in a field she loves and a promising future career.

I am also a proud daughter of parents who always valued education and made sacrifices to ensure that my brother, myself and both sisters all received a university education to follow our chosen careers to become an electrical engineer, a teacher, a designer and a doctor. They did not discriminate and give more opportunities to my brother just because of his gender.

My final inspiration has been Malala Yousafzai the 2014 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Her story “He named me Malala” goes to show how the courage and conviction of one girl can spread a message across the globe and how education can bring about hope and peace in the world.

 Challenging Global Environment

The YouTube clip below was created by the Human Resources Watch, to outline the challenges for Girls' Education in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a country that is located in Central South Asia. It is a country that has been torn apart by war and has not seen peace for many decades. Many Afghans have been forced to flee to other countries as refugees to escape the devastation of war and the rule of the Muslim fundamentalist group known as the Taliban. Since the nineties, the Taliban has been a strong force in Afghanistan and their power is still present to this day as they continue to be responsible for terrorist attacks and attacks on human rights. In 2012, the Taliban were responsible for the shooting of a school girl named Malala Yousafzai who refused to give up on her right to receive an education and attend school.

Under the Taliban rule, women were banned from work and activities outside the home. Women were forced to be fully covered with traditional Islamic clothing or endure severe punishment. State schools were shut down, and girls were no longer given an education.

Although the Taliban have been removed from power in Afghanistan and the war officially ended in 2014, it would seem that the societal norms and religious perspectives, are still making it difficult for girls to receive  an education.  The overall conditions and access to education are also limited, particularly for girls who live in rural areas.

The Human Resources watch reports (October 17, 2017) reports that:

“Afghan government and international donor efforts since 2001 to educate girls have significantly faltered in recent years. Sixteen years after the US-led military intervention in Afghanistan ousted the Taliban, an estimated two-thirds of Afghan girls do not attend school.”

Messages to Girls in Afghanistan

Dear precious young girl,
I am a teacher in Australia and I’m writing to you because I care about your education.
Through education, you can make decisions about what you want to do with your life. You deserve to learn to read and write and be able to hope for a better life for yourself and your family.
I want you to know that you are the future of your country and people around the world want to see you achieve your dreams.
My hope for you is that you can stay in school until you are ready to leave, and that you see in learning the power that is within you.
May you have the courage to believe that you can do whatever you want to do and that through your education, you can bring about lasting peace in your country.
Yours in Education,
Jacqueline Clark
