Something I am very passionate about is making sure that every child learns how to read, not only to increase each student’s joy and love for learning, but to enable them to access learning in every curriculum area.

"Learn to read in order to read to learn is an adage that highlights the power of written language as a tool for literacy and learning. Literacy is embedded in all school learning as well as in activities used for demonstrating learning. "

Graham, L .Berman, J. Bellert, A. Sustainable Learning; Inclusive practices for 21st century classrooms, Cambridge University Press, Port Melbourne, Australia, 2015

I have always had a love of literature and majored in Children’s Literature when I was completing my Diploma of teaching through the Institute of Catholic Education (I.C.E). As a classroom teacher, my specialty was teaching literacy and I worked hard to ensure all children could experience the joy of reading in the classes I have taught over the last twenty years.

I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity in 2012 to train to become a qualified Reading Recovery teacher. This has been the most rewarding and challenging role I have had as a teacher. I have had the privilege to work one on one with students, and make a difference in each young child’s life.

I believe that every child can acquire the strategies needed to become a reader, given the right environment for learning, and a teacher with an understanding of effective teaching in literacy.

I will be developing some ideas around literacy teaching on this site and will also be linking this closely with my Future Learning Space which will focus on the Teachers Without Border’s Initiative around Girl’s Education and the rights of girls to achieve an education no matter where they live.
